The Problem

The fridge is full. Nobody knows what to cook.

Home cooks face daily friction: a fridge full of ingredients, no clear idea what to make, food quietly going to waste, and a nightly slide into takeout.

Backward, High Friction

The Flawed Status Quo

Traditional recipe apps put the burden on the user. Search for a meal first, then hope you have the ingredients. Most of the time, you don't.

Search recipe → check pantry → give up → order takeout.
The Core Insight

Start with what you have.

People don't start with recipes; they start with what's already in the fridge. Fresh Fusion flips the model, so the meal is built around the ingredients you own.

Scan ingredients → generate recipes → cook confidently.

Decision Fatigue

Nightly ‘what's for dinner?’ loops drain energy and shorten meal decisions to 60 seconds of scrolling.

Food Waste

The average household throws away roughly a third of the food they buy, most of it produce and dairy.

Low Engagement

Recipe apps show a steep drop-off after week two because search-first flows don't build a habit.

My Role & Approach

End-to-end oversight, from brand to AI.

Engaged as Design Director for Fresh Fusion, I owned the strategic and creative arc: discovery, brand identity, UX architecture, AI interaction design, and hi-fidelity product design across the full mobile experience.

Mood Boards & Brand Exploration

From three moods to one confident direction.

Before locking in the identity, we explored three parallel visual worlds, Farm-Fresh & Organic Bliss, Bistro Elegance, and Earthly Elegance, then pressure-tested each against usability, scalability, and emotional resonance. The chosen direction, Natural Simplicity Meets Culinary Creativity, paired Montserrat's geometric clarity with a soft, organic palette that felt fresh without going twee.

Three mood boards explored in parallel to stress-test tone, palette, and audience fit.
Final decision: Option 1, Natural Simplicity Meets Culinary Creativity, chosen for its clean, scalable, emotionally resonant fit.

Farm-Fresh & Organic Bliss

Natural, wholesome, earthy

Soft greens, warm yellows, organic textures, and hand-drawn produce illustrations.

Bistro Elegance

Cozy, vintage, sophisticated

Chalkboard tones, delicate food illustrations, and moody culinary photography.

Earthly Elegance

Sophisticated, refined, warm

Deep greens, muted oranges, and clean geometric layouts for a wellness-forward feel.

Brand Identity & Design System

Key Strategic Decisions

Three calls that shaped the product.

01
Search-FirstIngredient-First

We rejected traditional recipe browsing and made scanning the primary entry point. It solves the actual friction: the fridge, not the search bar.

02
IndividualCommunity

We rejected a clinical, solo cooking tool. A social layer with shared recipes and weekly challenges keeps users cooking past week two.

03
UtilityUtility + Delight

We rejected cold, clinical interfaces. Motion, warm imagery, and playful micro-interactions turn habit formation into something users look forward to.

Prototypes

From lo-fi structure to hi-fi polish.

Design moved in two deliberate stages. Lo-fi wireframes locked the end to end journey, onboarding, authentication, smart scanner, ingredient recognition, recipe generation, meal planner, and profile, so structure and logic were validated before visual work began. Hi-fi prototypes then layered the brand system on top, translating skeleton flows into a warm, on brand product ready for usability testing and handoff.

Lo-Fi Prototype · Round 1
Early testing with pros and cons feedback
First round lo-fi prototype paired directly with tester feedback: intuitive flow, clear purpose, and minimal clutter validated the structure, while unclear instructions, limited visual feedback, and uncertain navigation drove the move to hi-fi with onboarding and richer cues.

Questions From The Room

The decisions people actually asked about.

How accurate is the AI Ingredient Scanner, and how did you handle edge cases where the AI misidentifies an ingredient?

That was one of our core UX challenges during testing. If the AI misidentifies a vegetable or misses an item, user frustration spikes immediately. To solve that, we didn't rely on a rigid ‘black box’ output. We designed an intermediate verification screen where the scanned items appear as editable tag pills. Users can tap to add, remove, or correct items in under two seconds before hitting ‘Generate Recipes.’ It bridges the gap between AI automation and human control.

Why add a social community feature to a utility app like a meal planner? Isn't that scope creep?

It would be scope creep if it was just a nice-to-have, but our user research proved that cooking is fundamentally tied to routine and motivation. Solo cooking apps suffer from a massive retention drop-off after week two because meal prep becomes a chore. By introducing community challenges and shared pantry wins, we turned a solitary utility into a habit-forming social companion, which directly drove our 7-day retention lift.
